PJ Fossum is a Copenhagen based pianist, synthesist and composer. Born and raised in Canada, he studied classical music in his childhood, and grew into more rhythmic and improvised musics in adolescence. Having moved to New York and cut his teeth in its jazz and improvised music scenes, he’s been moulded into a versatile artist. Now based in Copenhagen, he focuses on jazz and electro-acoustic music, pulling from a diverse range of aesthetic influences in an inventive and expressive manner across both acoustic and electronic instruments creating colourful and inventive sound worlds. One of his projects is a duo with New York based vocalist/composer Judette Elliston called Estuary. This collaboration envelopes the listener in a tapestry of soaring melodies and lush harmony drawing from the artistry of Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and Billy Strayhorn, seamlessly blending sincere melodies with free-flowing improvisation. Their debut EP will release in August 2024. He also plays regularly in Copenhagen with the PJ Fossum Trio made up of bassist Martin Brunbjerg Rasmusen and drummer Ivar Asheim. This ensemble ranges from jazz standards to more modern and explorative sounds. Additionally he has written a handful of other performance-specific pieces including; Guitar Summit CPH 2024 for 30 guitars and room (2024); Music for 5 Pianos (2022), TEXTING suite for small improvising ensemble, audience, and cell phones (2023); Svømme for 5 spatialized transducer-piano sound-system, and 9 piece ensemble (2022); Polyality for transducer-piano, two voice+electronics, and strings (2021); and ACTIVATION, inspired by notes of Alvin Lucier for piano, electronics, and tape (2019).
