Timbre of Time (or, timbre de temps) An exploration of the spectral approach to music, originated fifty years ago in France by pioneer composers Gerard Grisey and Tristan Murail. Timbre was never a new word to the French, and the approach has been carried on by many other composers into modern day. Today we will be listening to these French composers’ work within the timbre of their time. Also featuring music by Debussy and Jolivet, as well as Kaija Saariaho’s NoaNoa for flute and electronics — live electronics performed by composer Brian Garbet.
