About
Music with a Message
Paula Eve Kirman is a singer/songwriter who writes and performs music with a message. She has been performing her original work in Edmonton since 2007 at a variety of festivals, social justice events, and cafes.
She became interested in both music and social justice at a young age, in part due to being raised on her mother's love of 60s folk music by the likes of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Peter, Paul and Mary. After receiving her first guitar at 13, Paula immediately began to teach herself how to play and write songs. Paula's lyrics and poetry are especially known for having themes of social justice, and have been a contributing factor to a number of awards she has received for her activism. Her songs have been finalists or semi-finalists in a number of competitions. In particular, “Summer,” about an unhoused woman, was a finalist in the 2017 International Songwriting Competition.
Paula's most recent full-length album release, Corners, reached #3 on CJSR's Top 10 list of Folk/Country/Blues albums for 2023, and #36 on the station's overall Top 100 albums of 2023. Her first release, The Crow - co-produced with the late, great Bill Bourne - received a positive review from the Edmonton Journal. The song “Still Here” received
some airplay on CKUA and the song “Always” made the Edmonton Journal's “Fresh Tracks” Spotify list for 2023. The album also received airplay on CJSR, charting for a few weeks on the station's Folk/Roots/Blues charts, including reaching #1 on May 1, 2023 (coincidentally, the same day that Corners was released).
Paula recently completed writing songs for a third album, supported by a grant from the Edmonton Arts Council. She hopes to get back into the studio this summer.
