About
Big Blue is based out of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Written under blue skies and big water, and debuting with an instrumental EP of acoustic, easy listening, folk music.
Big Blue is smooth flowing acoustic music written under blue skies and big water. Ben Cornel layers together the sonic characteristics of steel-string guitar, nylon guitar, 12-string guitar, and banjo to create a pulsating collection of 6 instrumental songs for this debut. The Big Blue sound is inspired by the music and playing styles of artists like John Fahey, Junior Kimbrough, Paco de Lucia, Ali Farka Toure, and Toumani Diabate. This EP is an ode to that fingerpicking, instrumental, acoustic guitar sound.
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Ben Cornel has been an active musician for the past 8 years. After moving to Somba K’e (Yellowknife, Canada) in 2020 and being temporarily distanced from his bandmates in the heavy psychedelic rock band MOOCH, he started to compose guitar-focused instrumental pieces.
The album represents a swim through the collective subconscious. Entering through a cavernous dream-state; one faces the fear of deep water (thalassophobia) and what may be found in the unknown depths of the psyche. The music was heavily inspired by the grandeur of Tinde'e (Great Slave Lake).
Like water, Big Blue tunes take the shape of wherever they play. They have played at Farmer' Markets, Cafes, Restaurants, House Parties, Garden Parties, Community/School Family Fun Nights, and always serve to set an easy listening experience.
